August: Frozen Month – Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Baby Bella Mushrooms

Frozen month for me has been HARD. That's why you haven't seen anything yet. But, we've decided that if it comes from your freezer at some point, you can use it. (Or goes into your freezer.) So, I dug around and found a package of bacon that needed to be used and came up with a recipe for Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Baby Bella Mushrooms. These were a HUGE hit, even with the non-mushroom eaters in the house. They make for a perfect and easy appetizer or even a party hor d'oeuvres.
Ingredients:

  • 4oz - Cream Cheese
  • 9 Slices - Favorite Bacon (Approximately)
  • 10oz - Whole Baby Bella Mushrooms (Stems removed)
  • 1 - Garlic Clove (Minced)
  • 1 - Shallot (Minced)
  • 1/4 Tsp - Worcestershire (More to taste if you wish)

Process:

  1. Combine cream cheese, shallot, garlic, and Worcestershire in a blender.
  2. Pipe (or spoon) cream cheese mix into caps of the baby bella mushrooms.
  3. Wrap each stuffed mushroom in 3/4 to 1 whole slice of bacon. (Depends on the size of your mushroom caps.)
  4. Bake on a baking sheet for 15-25 minutes at 350ºF. (Cook until cheese is melty and bacon has a nice crisp color to it.)

The Product Farm – Vino2Go (Perky Purple) Product Review

Admittedly I've been sitting on this review for a lot longer than usual because really I wanted to figure out what to say and how to say it. I have a friend who loves her Vino2Go from The Product Farm. I like to call it "mommy's sippy cup" because guess what? I'm a bit of a wino, and I like to pretend my kids are the reason why I like to drink. So anyway, my friend has a Vino2Go and loves it, and of course I wanted one because I'm a wreck and spill just about anything liquid, especially my wine.

"Enjoy wine on-the-go while tailgating or while relaxing at the pool in style. The Vino2Go is a SAN acrylic plastic wine sippy cup - with clear benefits over the standard wine glass in many situations. It's lid design prevents spills on choppy oceans or while carting down the golf court. Vino on your wedding day with with less chance of ruining your white wedding dress or black tux! Keep bugs and dirt from getting in your wine while relaxing at the beach or in the garden... keep your wine cool for longer by insulating the exterior wall from the interior drink compartment." ~ The Product Farm

The product itself is pretty ingenious. It looks like a plastic encased wine glass with a lid. How is that concept not awesome? The pool in my condo complex allows non-breakable containers for alcohol and I thought that this would be absolutely perfect. And, for the most part it is. I even had the chance to tell a friend of mine who lives in the complex about The Product Farm and Vino2Go. She had been asking about them, and I could recount my first hand experience. Unfortunately I couldn't only say nice things about it, which REALLY is a bummer. I wanted to love the Vino2Go. I REALLY did. (I don't think you have any idea how excited I was about this thing, but you may be able to tell from my bug-eyed scary-smile photo.)

When my sippy cup arrived I immediately unboxed it and poured in as much wine as it could hold. (Holds 8oz in case you were curious.) I had requested the Perky Purple because obviously purple is my favorite color. So, I'm drinking out of my mommy sippy cup completely happy as a clam. It's not leaking when I take a sip. It stands up without feeling wobbly. It feels comfortable to hold. And really, I just feel like a cool bad-ass. Then I did the final test. I closed the mouth piece, and tipped it.... OMG IT LEAKED. Now, I'm not sure if this is a product flaw in general, or if there was just a bad batch. I'm kind of thinking product flaw because The Product Farm was AMAZING and sent me another because I had complained about the first one leaking. But... that one leaked too. (That's why I took so long to get this review written... I really wasn't sure what to say.) Typically, if I hate a product, I'll just not write about it.... but I don't hate this product, and that's where the write up gave me some issues.

I think the Vino2Go is a fantastic concept, and I still feel like a super cool kid when I use it. Yup, I still use it. "Nee ner nee ner, look what I have!" But, at the same time I'm so bummed the mouth piece leaked on both cups. It's not a huge deal, really, because how many people are going to tip their glasses over like that and get upset about a few drips coming out? But, at the same time if you're going to advertise it saving your wedding dress in the product description, the lid really needs to be leak proof. I expect it to leak a little from the air hole, but when the mouth piece is 100% closed.... nothing should be coming out (IMO). Otherwise, if you don't mind a few dribbles coming out if you tip it over, it's really a fun product that almost borderlines useful novelty. It definitely works for pool-side fun, and that's what I'd use it for anyway. Plus, if I'm using it around my house it'll at least keep any spills to a minimum if my spawn get their sticky fingers on my Vino2Go.

Definitely make sure you check out the Vino2Go and the rest of The Product Farm's products. You can also find them on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

VitaCost – Worker B Cream & Balm Product Review

I have personally shopped on VitaCost a lot in the past. (I used to use their referral program to build up credits and then purchase a bunch of house cleaning items, and other things that are typically expensive.) I've always been very happy with the products I've received. VitaCost always shipped relatively quickly and my items never arrived damaged, even if I thought the packaging was a little iffy. But really, what more could you want? The prices are fair and are typically less than the cost of the same item elsewhere and they have a HUGE variety of products always in stock ranging from beauty, to baby, to food, to vitamins and supplements, to your household cleaning goods.

I've been on a huge honey kick lately with everything so when the opportunity arose to test out some products that VitaCost carries, I jumped on the Worker B bandwagon. I requested the Worker B cream and the Worker B balm.

"Bee Collected. Be Nourished. Worker B."

Unfortunately these weren't my favorite products. It's not the fault of the product, but a personal preference. And hey, that's what happens when you try something new. Even as a blogger who is usually pretty satisfied with most things, I can't be expected to like everything all of the time. There are things I do really like about the Worker B products though starting with their ingredients.

The Worker B cream is made with ingredients straight from the hive that are handcrafted and don't contain any fillers. That's always a bonus. So many products these days have things in them that are more harmful than helpful. The Worker B balm is made with beeswax, organic olive oil, organic almond oil, organic avocado oil, raw honey, and propolis tincture. I've used other products containing all of these oils before and loved them, but they were in a product that wasn't quite so thick. However, they do work. At least in my personal experience. I also didn't read anything on the ingredient lists that said these were scented products. I could be wrong, but just by smelling them they seemed pretty natural and straightforward in that regard.

The balm and cream is definitely meant for extremely dry skin. They're both very thick, which is great for those who need that super strong moisturizing quality, and the cream can be applied all over your body - not just your hands or feet. However, I don't need that extra moisture and felt that it just kind of sat on my skin instead of absorbing. The cream can also be used on the pads of your furry friends. They get dry too esp. if walking a long time on hard pavement.

I do like the Worker B balm a little better than the cream. I've gotten more use out of it by using it on my lips, and Worker B says the balm is great for heat damaged skin. The balm is not anywhere near as thick as the cream, and while it's a little greasy, I'd definitely use it on my hands over the cream. It absorbs faster, feels less heavy, and doesn't leave a weird texture on my skin like the cream does.

The cream is a product that is great for those with sensitive skin, and I have a feeling the balm is as well. I'm personally a little bummed that these weren't my favorite products ever, but that won't stop me from being a fan of VitaCost. And there are plenty of people out there I'm sure would love the Worker B products. They're just not my thing.

If you want to check out VitaCost for yourself, make sure you go through THIS LINK. This will get you $10 to put toward your first purchase for $30 or more! VitaCost always has FREE shipping on orders more than $49, and they often times have some great deals on specific product brands, and even some pretty nifty shipping deals. But you gotta keep an eye out so you don't miss them.

Find VitaCost on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest too.

CampusBookRentals – Smiles for Miles

Collage has started (or will start soon), and there's nothing worse than knowing how much your tuition is costing you and then finding out how much more it's going to cost you with the added burden of text books. I've been there. Each semester I was shelling out at least $300, and that wasn't even for the super expensive science and math text books. (Not to mention, those darn text books tend to change every single year.) That's not much to smile about, right? Don't worry, CampusBookRentals is here to help you turn that frown upside down in more ways than one.

CampusBookRentals provides text book rentals for 40%-90% less than the cost of buying your books out right. Renting your textbooks is made even easier and more affordable with free shipping both ways. Want to highlight in a book you plan to sell back to your college book store? Forget about it. You write in it, and it's yours for keeps. CampusBookRentals allows you to highlight in the books you rent.

Have textbooks in your hoard that you're not sure what to do with and need some extra cash? CampusBookRentals has a new program called RentBack. They will rent out your books for you, and every time someone rents your book, you get paid 2-4x the amount you'd get if you sold your books directly back to the book store.

CampusBookRentals makes sure your smile is infectious. With every book rented they donate to Operation Smile. I've been a follower of the Operation Smile Facebook page for months now, and I love seeing the fantastic work they do. Operation Smile is an international children's charity that works to fix the smiles of children who are born with a cleft. These children often times cannot eat, speak, smile, and every donation to Operation Smile helps these children better integrate into society, and avoid being shunned by peers and family. Amazing, right?!

DreamWorks’ The Fifth Estate – Movie Poster

I just get more and more excited about this film the more I see and read about it! Check out the new The Fifth Estate movie poster and follow along online. And for those of you who are curious about what the title means: The Fifth Estate refers to citizen journalism. “Fifth Estate” is used to describe media outlets (including the blogosphere) that see themselves in opposition to mainstream media (the official press), any class or group in society other than the clergy (First Estate), the nobility (Second Estate), the commoners (Third Estate) and the press (Fourth Estate). It has been used to describe civil society, the poor or the proletariat.

THE FIFTH ESTATE opens wide in theaters on October 18th!

Official Biolerplate

Triggering our age of high-stakes secrecy, explosive news leaks and the trafficking of classified information, WikiLeaks forever changed the game. Now, in a dramatic thriller based on real events, “The Fifth Estate” reveals the quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an Internet upstart into the 21st century’s most fiercely debated organization. The story begins as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl) team up to become underground watchdogs of the privileged and powerful. On a shoestring, they create a platform that allows whistleblowers to anonymously leak covert data, shining a light on the dark recesses of government secrets and corporate crimes. Soon, they are breaking more hard news than the world’s most legendary media organizations combined. But when Assange and Berg gain access to the biggest trove of confidential intelligence documents in U.S. history, they battle each other and a defining question of our time: what are the costs of keeping secrets in a free society—and what are the costs of exposing them?"

A dramatic thriller based on real events, “The Fifth Estate” reveals the quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an Internet upstart into the 21st century’s most fiercely debated organization.

Disneynature’s BEARS – Trailer & Poster Now Available

If I could buy JUST the Animal Planet T.V. channel, I would. I love animal shows and movies! After watching the trailer I cannot wait to see Disneynature's BEARS! The program SEE “BEARS,” PROTECT OUR NATIONAL PARKS invites everyone to see the film during opening week (April 18-24, 2014) and Disneynature, via the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund, will make a contribution to the National Park Foundation, the official charity of America’s national parks, to protect wildlife and wild places across America’s national park system.

"In an epic story of breathtaking scale, Disneynature’s new True Life Adventure “Bears” showcases a year in the life of a bear family as two impressionable young cubs are taught life’s most important lessons. Set against a majestic Alaskan backdrop teeming with life, their journey begins as winter comes to an end and the bears emerge from hibernation to face the bitter cold. The world outside is exciting—but risky—as the cubs’ playful descent down the mountain carries with it a looming threat of avalanches. As the season changes from spring to summer, the brown bears must work hard to find food—ultimately feasting at a plentiful salmon run—while staying safe from rival male bears and predators, including an ever-present wolf pack. “Bears” captures the fast-moving action and suspense of life in one of the planet’s last great wildernesses—Alaska!" ~ Disneynature

General Motors Reception – Checking Out the Newly Revamped 2014 Chevy Impala

As some of you may know, I've recently joined the fantastic foodie team at Girl Meets Food as a food and events photographer! This is a new development I am SO excited about, and you should definitely start following them via Social Media to see what we're all up to in the Washington D.C. area. So anyway, thanks to Girl Meets Food I was offered an invite courtesy of General Motors to their pre-show reception on August 5th at Wolf Trap before the OneRepublic concert. I had no idea what I was in for, but I knew that the brand new, completely revamped 2014 Chevy Impala was going to be there and I was excited. I love cars! Who doesn't??

The reception was a lot of fun, and was catered by Mindy's Catering local to Washington D.C. and the food was delicious! Drinks were also provided for all attendants along with a door prize for tweeting about the reception. Once we took a look around we went and found the 2014 Chevy Impala. She is a SNAZZY vehicle! I had the opportunity to talk to Clarence Davis, Jr. the GM Communications Coordinator. I asked him what he thought the best redesigned feature of the Impala is, and he said it was definitely the new grill. I can see why he said that. I think it's sleeker, more edgy, has more detail and looks beautiful. (I got him to pose for a photo for me!)

I also had the chance to check out the vehicle. Don't you just love being handed the keys to a car that isn't yours?
My husband and I checked out the revamped 2014 Chevy Impala inside and out, and we were both genuinely impressed! The trunk is massive, there is plenty of room in the back seat for pets or minions, and the front is spacious with every button and gadget you could ever need or want. My favorite feature, and it usually is on any car is the sun roof. It was really quite big compared to the size of the car, and I just adore being able to see the sky and have the natural light in my car while I'm driving.
There are several features of the newly designed 2014 Chevy Impala, but for the sake of time and space I'm just going to list a few of my favorites. You can read about all of them HERE.

  • Aerodynamic exterior contours
  • Roomy & Quiet
  • Ergonomically placed controls
  • V6 Engine offers 28 MPG Highway
  • Rear Park Assist

Chevy certainly impressed with the 2014 Impala. Just wish I could have driven it! Definitely a car to check out if you're in the market.

Once again thank you to Girl Meets Food and GM for the reception!

Disney’s PLANES – Flying into Your Children’s Hearts

My daughter has been talking constantly about seeing Disney's PLANES. Every single time a trailer has come on the Disney channel she shouts out, "Disney's PLANES!! It's Disney's PLANES!" Needless to say this was not a screening we were going to miss. How can you say no to a child who is so darn excited about seeing a movie?? Much less saying no to taking your kids out for their first movie theater going experience. As my daughter so succinctly put it, "This is so awesome!"

The squeal from my daughter at the beginning of the movie was enough to tell me this movie is worth seeing. While I personally thought the voice casting was a little iffy, I thoroughly enjoyed Dane Cook's vocal appearance as Dusty Crop-Hopper and thought he added that little extra sparkle that all Disney movies should have. (Hey, I think the guy is hilarious, and a good chunk of eye candy to boot.) I have a feeling if Disney makes a Planes 2 that everything will be just a little bit better the next time around... kind of like the way Cars was and many of their other sequels.

The movie starts out a little slow, spending about 15 minutes introducing all of the characters, but since they are all knew to viewers, it makes sense. Immediately you get a feel for the plight of Dusty and by the time he makes it to the point of racing you're already cheering him on as the underdog. There was one sad/scary moment when you're on the edge of your seat wondering where the movie is going to go next. My daughter blurted out, "Oh no Disney's PLANES! It's going to be OK."

The movie also had some great comedic lines which had the entire theater cracking up. I think laughter is always a good sign that a movie is appreciated and enjoyed. I love movies that teach children the lesson of reaching for the stars. I see video clips every day of real people who have to overcome disabilities and other adversity just to function day to day, so watching Dusty Crop-Hopper soar above and beyond everyone's expectations of him was heart warming and a lesson I hope my kids took in.

Definitely a cute movie, and I hope Disney follows it up with a sequel some day! We'll definitely be seeing it if they do. I'm also sure Disney's PLANES is now a movie my daughter will watch daily once it comes out on DVD.

Disney's PLANES soars into theaters everywhere TODAY! (8/23) While you're waiting to go see it, make sure you check out Disney.com's Flew Tube! You'll find:

  • Planes Trailers & Clips
  • Paper Airplane Tutorials
  • Features on Remote Controlled Flyer enthusiasts
  • Introductions to parts of a plane
  • Flight-related Disney legacy content

You can also find Disney's PLANES on on Facebook, Twitter, Online, and find more video content on the new Planes RSN Channel on Youtube.

*I was provided a chance to see a Disney PLANES screening courtesy of Disney & Allied Integrated Marketing in order to facilitate this post/review. All opinions are 100% mine. See Disclosure Policy.
