I rarely involve myself in anything that has to do with politics or the military. I follow along, but more as a silent bystander. However, today is a different story. Today I'm livid. Today I am trying with all of my willpower not to use profanity when I write this. Why? Because, TODAY I found out a friend of mine, who served in the Navy for five years, has been denied "Veteran" status because he just so happens to be a resident of New Jersey.
Yes, you read that right. My friend Steven Schwartz has been denied "Veteran" status because he did not serve in a "combat zone" during a peace mission - AKA the Iraqi freedom/Global War on Terrorism. And this, in the State of New Jersey means he is not a veteran. First of all I don't see why New Jersey has any say, but that's a completely different issue.
The ISSUE is that my friend has written a letter to his Congressman, Bill Pascrell, TWO weeks ago and still has not received a response. Good going New Jersey. You're not only a bunch of jerks slapping military members in the face, but so far, your Congressman is failing to do his job. Your Congressman is there to represent the people, especially the veterans. Pascrell is ignoring a person who voluntarily served our country. And while Congress is supposed to pass laws, they are overlooking one big law failure.
So, what I'm asking is that anyone who reads this, SHARES this on your Social Media outlets, link to it in another post, tell your friends and family, and SPEAK OUT. This is horsesh*t. Woops - see I told you I'm furious. This needs to be changed NOW!
Want to read Schwartz's letter toPascrell? Here it is:
My name is Steven Schwartz. I am a five-year Veteran of the United States Na vy. I served those five years on board a nuclear submarine. I came home about a year ago after my most recent deployment to the "western pacific". As you most likely know, the submarines of the United States carry the name "Silent Service". Very little people know or understand the critical role that they play in intelligence gathering and peacekeeping. However, being a Congressman, I am sure that you have a general idea of their role. If you are not very familiar with submarines, I recommend reading the novel “Blind Man's Bluff: The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage” by Sherry Sontag, Christopher Drew, and Annette Lawrence Drew. However, that is all beside the point my real quarrel is with the State of New Jersey’s Veteran Law P.L. 2007, CHAPTER 115. I have read it thoroughly and it only makes mention of “combat zone veterans”. I have a major issue with this especially because large portions of “combat zone veterans” never actually see combat. Of course, they are in a greater danger than people that are stateside. However, with that being said some “combat zone veterans” face no greater danger than you or I driving to work each day. Furthermore, could you consider them being in a greater amount of harm’s way than the crew onboard is the USS George Washington when it caught fire on April 22nd, 2008 or possibly the crew of the USS San Francisco (My Vessel) when she struck an “undersea mountain” on January 8th, 2005. Granted I will not argue the fact that many men and women have gone to Iraq and Afghanistan and seen traumatic events that I am glad I will never have to experience. However, that does not prevent the fact that when my ship was in dry dock in Washington State. I did still applied to be a volunteer to go on an Individual Augmented tour for a year to Iraq in 2007. With submarines being some of the Navy’s most elite, I was denied the opportunity that I would have gladly accepted at the time. Nonetheless, when I participated in my “Western Pacific” deployment we had several missions that were highly classified missions. Obviously, I cannot speak about the missions possibly in 30 years I can however, there is no documentation of where my ship patrolled. Regardless of whether I was in a “combat zone”, I feel I was in harm’s way based solely on our area of operations. In addition, to the area of operation I feel as though whenever I went “underway” I was in grave danger. If you feel otherwise please feel free to look up the most recent event onboard the USS Miami if that had happened while the ship was submerged chances are we would have lost her and her 130-member crew. With everything until now said, please do not forget about the horrible excursions to “Davey Jones’ Locker” that the USS Thresher and USS Scorpion faced. Both ships were lost with their entire crew. In conclusion, I do appreciate the efforts that the actual combat veterans have contributed to this wonderful nation. However, I do feel as though any veteran that has been deployed for greater than 30 days should enjoy the rights to the same benefits. There are many non-combat seeing veterans of “warzones or peacekeeping missions”. As a result, I feel as though I am entitled the same benefits for serving in the United States Armed Forces. Furthermore, while being part of the Elite of the Navy, whom have risked their lives and served onboard a nuclear submarine.
Thank you for your consideration,
Steven M Schwartz"
I was a college student once. Seems like it was a very long time ago. Fortunately I didn't live too far from home, and was able to stop in to do laundry, pick up groceries, and visit. But, I had several friends who were states away from their families. Many were sent care packages, and I could tell that they felt a little less lonely when their eyes lit up at all of the goodies their mom (parents) had taken the time to mail to them.
mygofer.com published an interesting info-graphic about college students. The info-graphic shows that college students' eating habits, hygiene, and personal care are sub-par. Students are likely to gain weight in their first two years of college (mostly in the first semester) due to poor eating habits, including eating fast food multiple times a week. Even 3 out of 4 students admit to poor oral hygiene.
Now moms, I know sending your kids off to college can be scary, and sad, but you can help them out with mygofer.com and help make sure they maintain healthy, and clean habits while away. mygofer.com allows moms (parents) the ability to shop online for your college student. It's like a huge grocery/retail store online. mygofer.com carries personal care and beauty products, toiletries, paper goods, pet supplies (just in case your student felt FiFi needed to come along for the college experience), and healthy foods and snacks. Talk about an awesome grocery delivery service! With more than 100,000 products to choose from, you're sure to be able to customize the perfect care package for your student.
Don't worry, you won't have to drive across the country to deliver it, or even stop in at the Post Office. mygofer.com is different in the fact that after you place an order, someone actually goes to a local store and picks out the items and then delivers them. If your student needs something immediately, mygofer has partnered with Kmart, and your student will be able to pick up the ordered items for FREE. Otherwise items will be delivered same-day, or you can select a specific date for your package to arrive.
mygofer wants to make sure this is an affordable service, and offers money saving perks that include Refer-A-Friend, GoPass, Shop Your Way Rewards, and their Savings Center.

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jul. 23, 2012-- (NASDAQ:AMZN)—Amazon.com, Inc. today announced its Big Fall Books Preview (www.amazon.com/fallbookspreview). In anticipation of the publishing season that’s known for some of the most exciting debuts, well-regarded nonfiction and blockbuster fiction, the Amazon.com Books Editors have made their selections for fall’s ten most intriguing releases. Their Big Fall Books Preview also features the season’s most anticipated releases in fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, biographies and mysteries, along with the most exciting upcoming releases for kids and teens.
“Fall tends to bring readers some of the best, most-sure-to-be-talked-about books, and this year’s lineup looks especially impressive,” said Sara Nelson, Editorial Director of Books and Kindle, Amazon.com. “In fact, our Editorial team was so excited about so many upcoming books that, in addition to the Top 10 list, each of us picked three more upcoming books that we already love, or can’t wait to get our hands on, and included these suggestions as another feature in our Big Fall Books Preview. Whether customers are looking for a book for their teenager, or the delicious novels they’ll soon devour in front of a fire, there’s plenty of great reading to go around.”
Below are the Amazon Books Editors’ picks for the 10 most intriguing books of Fall, listed alphabetically by author:
- “Telegraph Avenue” by Michael Chabon: The beloved author of “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay” returns with a knowing story of life in politically correct northern California.
- “America Again: Re-becoming the Greatness We Never Weren’t” by Stephen Colbert: According to the author and TV phenomenon, this one might “singlebookedly pull this country back from the brink.”
- “The Twelve (Book Two of The Passage Trilogy)” by Justin Cronin: In a world ravaged by the vampire apocalypse that spread in “The Passage,” survivors band together to eradicate the origins of the virus.
- “Winter of the World: Book Two of the Century Trilogy” by Ken Follett: The follow-up to “Fall of Giants” is a doorstop of a tale of World War II and the nuclear age.
- “Flight Behavior” by Barbara Kingsolver: Global warming has never been so fascinating—or beautiful—as in this novel by the renowned author of “The Poisonwood Bible.”
- “The Casual Vacancy” by J.K. Rowling: The very definition of “highly anticipated,” this blackly comic tale of a town in trouble is the Harry Potter creator’s first book expressly for adults.
- “Joseph Anton: A Memoir” by Salman Rushdie: From the celebrated novelist, the true-life tale of hiding for his life.
- “NW” by Zadie Smith: A characteristically brilliant comic novel about four young people making their way in complicated London.
- “The Oath: The Obama White House v. the Supreme Court” by Jeffrey Toobin: A surprising look at how two branches of government do—and don’t—get along.
- “Back to Blood” by Tom Wolfe: Think “Bonfire of the Vanities” goes to Miami. Class, race, politics. It’s all there—in Wolfe’s typically audacious style.
