Father's Day is right around the corner (June 17th), and it seems to me that dads often get the short end of the stick on their holiday. Maybe this isn't always the case, but at least in our house it certainly is. Breakfast in bed is once every few years. A kid-free day is non existent, and presents are usually something cheesy and not as useful or techy as my husband would like. Then, there are many fathers who are out of the country due to military commitments, or other work. Plus we can't forget that there seem to be many dads who are unable to see their children as often as they'd like due to family circumstances, or for the fact that their children are grown and have moved away, are at college, or have started families of their own limiting the amount of travel. Father's Day should be just as special for those wonderful dads as Mother's Day is for all of our fabulous mothers, and Beach Camera can help by offering a great variety on cameras at some of the best prices I've seen.
With how quickly life moves these days, capturing every moment is practically impossible. We try to immortalize these fleeting moments with the convenient camera feature most of us have on our phones, but the quality is usually less than impressive. Generally these images are nothing we'd be able to print out, edit, or keep for years except maybe in a folder on our computers we dump all of the photos in - good and bad. However, a quality camera is generally expensive. I usually work with a Canon 40D DSLR and let me tell you, that $1,500 price tag put me into debt for a few years. I wasn't convinced that any Point and Shoot could make me happy, especially an "affordable" one. If you can't tell, I'm a bit of a camera snob. There is only one brand (so far) that I have been continuously happy with; Canon. Beach Camera offered to send me a Canon PowerShot A3400 IS Camera Bundle for me to review just in time for Father's Day!
In The Canon PowerShot A3400 IS Bundle Box:
- Canon PowerShot A3400 IS
- 4GB HC SD Card
- Canon Camera Case
- Battery Charger
- USB Data Cable
- Wrist Cord
- Digital Camera Solutions CD
The Canon PowerShot A3400 IS Bundle has a list price of $279.99 (Ouch!), however Beach Camera sells it for only $129. That is a huge discount from the list price. Like I said, Beach Camera has some of the best prices I've seen. Regardless of purchasing the Canon PowerShot A3400 IS Bundle at the list price, or at Beach Camera's price, I have to say this little Point and Shoot camera is pretty bad-ass. Two qualities I always look for in a camera is how user friendly it is, and how solid it feels. A camera is worthless if you can't figure out how to use it easily, and no one wants to dump a good chunk of change on a product that feels flimsy. In my experience, Canon always performs well on these two aspects.
The Canon PowerShot A3400 IS is so easy to use, that after charging the battery for a few hours, you can literally use it at its basic functionality right out of the box. You do have to set the date and time right away or else it'll ask you to do it every time you turn on your camera. However, this is completely self explanatory, and I didn't find that it required the manual. The day the camera arrived I took my daughter to a Special Olympics Parade on the UMaine campus. Unfortunately it was raining, and some water found its way onto the lens creating some smudges, but for my first time out with this sleek beauty, I was extremely happy with the results.
I LOVE the huge 3 inch screen, and the easy controls. Although I have to say my favorite feature is the touch screen! Yup, it has a touch screen. How cool is that? You can even release the shutter by using the screen instead of the shutter button located at the top of the camera. You can also easily select who/what you want to remain in focus by tapping the screen, and it'll follow your subject until you create the composition you want. The physical design of the camera is compact and sleek. Almost all of the controls and features are just about flush with the body of the camera. There is no added bulk like some cameras have due to the larger batteries they use. I have large hands for a woman, and found the camera is easy to hold, and the controls were large enough to find without looking. The next test of the Canon PowerShot A3400 IS was the 720p HD video capabilities. I just purchased a video camera, however it's large, and an additional product I would have to carry with me if I wanted to capture both photo and video. While at the parade, I took a short video of the Anna Shriners in their little trucks, and I have to say I was very impressed with the video and sound quality. Not only was the quality better than I expected, but using the video feature is as simple as pressing a video dedicated button, and then pressing it again when I was done recording.
With 16 Mega Pixels, Touch Panel LCD, 5x Optical Zoom, 720p HD Video, Smart AUTO, and Image Stabilization, in addition to all of the other features, I really couldn't be happier with the Canon PowerShot A3400 IS Beach Camera sent for review. The only thing that I wish was better, is the flash release. There is just a slightly longer pause than I would have liked, however all of the other awesomeness makes this just about unnoticeable. In fact, my husband purchased a Nikon Point and Shoot for me at Christmas, and I will be giving it to my mother because the Canon PowerShot A3400 performs better on all aspects other than the flash release.
If you're looking for that perfect camera, make sure you check out Beach Camera! Their prices are highly competitive, and my experience in working with them has been great. Take the time to connect with them on Facebook and Twitter as well! They'd love to hear from you.
